Kate O’Brien appointed trustee of Mobee Gambia

Mobee Gambia, which develops understanding of mental health and wellbeing across Gambia, has appointed Manchester-based Konductor founder Kate O’Brien as new trustee and director.

Kate, founder and director of Manchester business communications specialist agency Konductor, will work as part of Mobee’s board of trustees and regional teams, bringing her communications expertise to advise on the charity’s growing presence and work in some of the Gambia’s most vulnerable communities.

In the Gambia, Mobee is the only non-government organisation of its kind with dedicated resources to champion and raise awareness of mental health across local communities. Mobee delivers practical, social and emotional support within people’s homes and via a dedicated drop in facility and is currently in the process of setting up a community wellbeing centre to provide both residential and after care during a period of crisis. Mobee also offers human resource support to patients and staff at Tanka Tanka Psychiatric hospital, the only mental health hospital in the country.

Since 2013, Mobee has been supported by North West based Alternative Futures Group, one of the UK’s largest health and social care charities. Established by the late, Neil Campbell the charity is driving forward his vision to transform the services in The Gambia.

Kate said: “In the UK we have seen a real awakening and awareness around mental health and it is easy to forget that this is far from the case in other parts of the world. The number of people with mental health needs in the Gambia is growing but the resources to help them are scarce, so all too often they can be alienated, abused or abandoned. Mobee has put itself at the heart of communities to help with practical and sustainable solutions and I am enormously proud to be supporting their team with my experience and expertise.”

Phil Piper from Mobee Gambia said: “Mobee works with communities in the Gambia to promote a move away from institutional care and towards utilising local resources to meet people’s mental health needs in their own homes. Raising awareness of our work is vital to our continued success and we are delighted to welcome Kate to our board and panel of trustees.”

Kate is founder and director of communications and customer insight business Konductor which has worked for and with a wide range of businesses, from start-ups to global and AIM brands including Daisy Group and AccessPay. Kate is also an ACIB-accredited group board director with 25+ years in commercial, product and marketing roles within companies including Daisy Group, Paymex, Alliance & Leicester and Matalan.
